Tips for a Colorado Snowshoe and Cross-Country Ski Adventure

While Colorado might be well-known for its 32 downhill ski resorts that draw millions to the slopes every season, that’s not the only winter fun available. One of our favorite wintertime activities is to don our snowshoes or cross-country skis and hit the Colorado trails. Here are some cross-country skiing (AKA Nordic or XC skiing) and snowshoeing tips to know before you head out. 

Gear for Cross-Country Skiing or Snowshoeing

Most of us will want to try out an activity before investing in equipment. The good news is that in Colorado many ski-rental shops, Nordic centers, and even sporting goods stores will have all the equipment you need to rent or purchase. Dress in moisture-wicking layers so that you can add or take off items as your body temperature changes throughout your workout.  

Where to Learn

Even though it’s common to hear, “Anyone who can walk, can snowshoe,” as with any activity, there are things to learn to make your time snowshoeing or cross-country skiing more enjoyable. You can learn tips from a friend, take lessons at a ski shop or Nordic center, or even work with a guide who specializes in the sports. Generally, snowshoeing is much easier for beginners to learn than cross-country skiing. 

Where to Go

As long as there’s a good blanket of snow on the ground (2-6 inches for XC skiing depending on how rocky the terrain and 10 inches or more for snowshoeing) you could cross-country ski or snowshoe anywhere even in city and state parks. Cross-country skiers need relatively flat terrain, while snowshoers can traverse anywhere they would normally hike (snowshoes are designed for the type of terrain you plan to travel whether flat or mountainous). In Colorado, many Nordic centers are tied to ski resorts and offer miles of groomed trails, lessons, and rentals. Additionally, you can find more destinations through the Colorado Cross Country Ski Association

Share the Trail

Whether you choose to cross-country ski or snowshoe, you’ll likely encounter people doing the other activity because the trails are often shared. If you’re on snowshoe, take special care to avoid marring the smooth tracks left by the skiers. Keep in mind that both activities are a quiet, tranquil time with nature. Keep your voices quiet as you enjoy either activity.
