Pilates on the Go: Extend your Pilates Practice Outside the Studio

Back

How do you take all you learn at the Pilates studio home with you? While our in-studio sessions use special Pilates equipment such as the reformer, tower, chair, Cadillac, and more, we can set you up with an at-home program using limited or no props to extend your practice outside the studio and when traveling.

Pilates at home

The more time you spend on your Pilates practice outside the studio, the more impactful your in-studio sessions will become. Additionally, time spent on your Pilates practice keeps you moving well and feeling well.

Your home program can vary in length based on your goals and schedule. Small props can be added to enhance your experience and take up minimal space/be contained to a mat. Exercises using your own body weight (such as quadruped and plank) are often included too.

Some examples of Pilates props:

  • Resistance bands: Bands are a versatile addition to your at-home Pilates routine and can increase the difficulty in moves such as marching, clams, squats, and numerous upper body exercises. Bands can also be incorporated in rotation based exercises to improve mobility and stretching exercises to improve flexibility.
  • Pilates ring: A ring adds resistance and can be used for upper and lower body exercises as well as in supine, seated, kneeling and standing.
  • Small and medium size balls: A set of small balls (5 inches) can be used for self myofascial release and a medium size ball (10-12 inches) can be used to support alignment and increase challenge.
  • OOV and hand weights: The OOV is designed to challenge stability, enable mobility, and improve balance. Adding a set of hand weights to your OOV program can increase stability, mobility and load.

The instructors at Taylor Pilates and Fitness can customize an at-home Pilates workout for you. Be sure to update your home program every 8 weeks to support your goals and improve your fitness.

Pilates on vacation

Just as Pilates is accessible from home, it can be done easily in as little as 15 minutes while on vacation – even in the comfort of your hotel room on a towel. Our instructors would be happy to design a vacation Pilates mini or full workout for you.

Here are some exercises to try:

  • Prone press ups or swimming
  • Single and double leg stretch
  • Book-openings or seated spine twist
  • Standing Pilates footwork
