Falls Hikes to Enjoy the Aspens in Colorado

Back

Not only will you be greeted by cooler temperatures when you go for a fall hike in Colorado, but you will also be surrounded by the grandeur of glistening golden aspens. Enjoying a fall hike in Colorado to see the glorious aspens is one of our favorite ways to move well, feel well, and live well. Here are 6 Colorado fall hikes where you can see the extraordinary transformation of aspens every September and October.

First Flatiron Trail, Boulder

The Flatiron trails in southwest Boulder are part of the 26-acre Chautauqua Park, one of only 25 National Historic Landmarks in the state. While there are multiple trails in the park, we like the 2.7-mile loop of First Flatiron trail to get the best views of the changing colors around the area.

Raccoon Loop, Golden Gate Canyon

Another option to enjoy a hike and the aspens closer to Denver is the Raccoon Loop of Golden Gate Canyon. The loop meanders through meadows, along creeks, and through a pine forest. At the Panorama Point viewing area, you’ll be welcomed with views of the Front Range. This is an easy 2.5-mile hike perfect for families.

Sprague Lake Loop, Rocky Mountain National Park

While any hike in Rocky Mountain National Park is worthwhile, Sprague Lake Loop is an easy trek with stunning views and minimal elevation gain. The mirror image of the aspens reflected from the water doubles your pleasure.

Piney River Falls Trail, near Vail

Vail is spectacular in the fall. Piney River Falls trail has quaking aspens plus a cascading waterfall. The overall experience gives the famed Maroon Bells competition. This hike is nearly 6 miles long round-trip, so be sure to bring water, snacks and pack everything out when you leave. Don’t be surprised if you think you’re walking into a painting—it’s that gorgeous!

Mt. Bierstadt Hike, Guanella Pass

If you’re looking for a fall hike to enjoy the aspens that has something for everyone, we suggest the Mt. Bierstadt Hike because you can decide how long your hike will be (anywhere from one to seven miles roundtrip) and how strenuous (easy to difficult). Whatever you choose, we know you won’t be disappointed.

Kenosha Pass Hike, near Grant

One of the most talked about Colorado fall hikes to enjoy the aspens is the Kenosha Pass Hike. It also offers flexibility, and you can determine if you want to make it an easy or a moderate hike. The aspens are stunning but so are the views of the surrounding peaks.
